While sightseeing in London several years ago, I had a brief chat with an older gentleman wearing a funny hat. It went something like this:
me: "Excuse me, could we get a picture with you?"
gent: "Pardon?"
me: "Could we get a picture with you?"
gent: "What?"
me: "..a picture?"
gent: with a very confused/concerned expression "...sorry?"
me: holding up my camera "Could we get a picture with you?"
gent: "Oh, you mean a photo. Speak english, dear."
Once we understood one another he was kind enough to pose for a round of photos, but his words left an impression on me. So, this is a photo...not a picture. Oh, and it was taken by Ava.

...and we're off
He's off, actually...the he referring to Ryan and the off referring to him (Ryan again) leaving Cambodia for Malaysia...Kuala Lumpur more specifically. Yes, Kuala Lumpur...where residents known as KLites share their home with the world's tallest twin buildings (thanks wikipedia), an IKEA (again...thanks), and now Ryan (as I've already mentioned).

vintage thursday: blue edition
My guest post over at Sweet Figments today includes a myriad of vintage goods in a most delightful hue...blue! There were so many good options on etsy that I couldn't fit them all into one post so I've added two more of my favorites here. You can see the rest of my picks along with what I had to say right here.
good advice

While perusing some favorite blogs the other day I came across this most delightful illustration from the 1950s Manners to Grow On - an etiquette book for children. I love the advice and the illustration (and the fact that it involves a push mower)! I did some looking, and this delightful book (sure to be full of other excellent advice) can be yours for a mere $2 right here.

home inspiration: pretty scary
If I ever decided to open a tattoo studio, I would want it to look like this. Apparently Brooklyn based Scott Campbell felt the same way because he did and it does. Though I also love the idea of using near clashing themes placed side by side in a home too. I like, for instance, how the softness of the chaise brings out all the soft curving lines in the work above, and how, alternately, the artwork adds an edge to the otherwise prim chaise. Everything here is working to create a balance between hard and soft.

zoo
Ava and I spent all morning at the Honolulu Zoo where we saw all our favorite animals (aka elephants and giraffes), played with other little kids, and saw a couple sets of hippo teeth up close. I (unfortunately) didn't take any photos.
This giraffe graffiti I found on flickr is pretty fun though:

how about a shop update
Take a gander at these most adorable vintage goods that Julie has added to the shop. I think they are super pretty, and would look smashing together.

international talk like a pirate day
Arrr, ye best be usin' words like swashbuckle, wench, and matey today. And, though it be not required, ye may want to be usin' an eye patch for effect.
Editors Note: While talking like a pirate can be fun, I must implore you to leave it at just talking (and possibly dressing up a bit). Acting like a pirate or involving yourself in any sort of pirating practices can be dangerous and morally reprehensible. Thank you for your consideration.

the wandering boy
Today Ryan left on a business trip that will take him to eight different countries over the next month. The first leg will start in Thailand after a short stop in Japan. I am a little jealous because lately I've been dying to do some traveling of my own. I'm consoling myself with the fact that he'll be working while he's away and not just sightseeing.
If you want to make a guess as to when and where he'll be headed next go ahead and do so. I'll see what I can do about prizes for winning guesses...or better yet, we could get Ryan to send you a souvenir from his travels.

home inspiration: yellow chairs
I would love to have a set of these to go around the dining table.

10 things I did today:
1. fed a black swan with brown pellets marketed as fish and bird food
2. took loads of photos
3. watched two peacocks walk into a gift shop
4. decided that "two peacocks walk into a gift shop" sounded like the beginnings of a great joke and thought about possible punch lines
5. ran to get out of the rain
6. made a late night grocery store run for NyQuil which yielded a grocery store brand NyQuil knock-off and a magazine
7. ate pineapple mixed with a spoonful of a slightly spicy red powder bought at the Aloha Swap Meet
8. learned more about mummification via The Discovery Channel
9. opened an empty mailbox
10. leaned out the window to smell the city after a rainstorm

trashy
Ry's mom and grandma came into town yesterday so we've been out doing the sightseeing thing. Not that dumpsters are a big tourist attraction. They...um...just happen to be next to one.

where we were
We should have been home cleaning the house this morning in preparation for our visitors that will be arriving tomorrow. Instead, we opted to go to the bakery and then stop here for photos.
vintage thursday
Just a friendly reminder that you can see my writing over at Sweet Figments today. This week's post includes plenty of cute photos of vintage toys and outlines the reasons why I need someone I know to have a baby girl. Hint: It includes this coat wanting a home.
