thanksgiving
Maunawili Falls.
I decided I wanted to go after seeing these photos. Afterwards we spent some time wandering around downtown while the city was empty and quiet. We passed by one lady at a bus stop who had with her some bread crumbs and a hundred birds.

flamingos are funny
I know I'm kind of stating the obvious here, but some things don't get mentioned enough. The backwards knees and pink feathers are only the the beginning...look at their beady eyes, giant downturned beaks, and impossibly curvy necks. If I'm being perfectly honest, I find them a little bit frightening.
Another thing that is funny - When I asked Ava if she would like to see the orangutans she said no, she just wanted to see the "lizards and skinks." I wasn't aware she knew what a skink was.

home inspiration: walls
Despite moving in almost six months ago, most of our walls are still pretty bare. It's starting to drive me crazy. Here's what I would rather they look like:
Hugo Guinness via Ali Loves Curtis
Linocuts + vintage frames + over crowding = yes please.
via thrift candy
Perfect. Now I just need a staircase.
via The Selby
This is completely unexpected (and awesome) in a bathroom.
via loveology
I'm particularly keen on the large piece in the middle...and the fact that the large piece is actually not in the middle.

stepping out
We have some guests coming for the weekend. The weather this morning has been cold and stormy, but I'm hoping it will clear up long enough for them to get some beach time in. Regularly scheduled erratic posting will resume on Monday.

Just a reminder that I'm still writing weekly guest posts over at Sweet Figments. You can see my vintage buyer's gift guides for men and women here, and one for the little ones here.

silhouettes & snip snips
I've mentioned before about the monthly thrift swap that my dear friend and vintage retailing cohort, Julie and I engage in. I also mentioned before about what a treat it is to receive package after package full of lovely thrifted gems from someone so skilled in the art of thrifting as Julie is. Now I feel compelled to mention this latest (and greatest) addition to my growing collection of thrifted by JJ merchandise. Behold the dress:
Now I know what you're thinking. It's something along the lines of, "Yeah, it's a cute dress, but whatever. To really impress me, it needs to be something spectacular. It needs a little extra something to elevate it from just 'cute, but whatever' to something worth blogging about." Well, dear reader, allow me to direct your attention to this next image. I think you may be changing your mind about this dress now:
Seriously, is there a better print in existence? I think, no.
Also, I cut my hair yesterday. Hooray for bangs...uh, I mean fringe...that's what the cool kids are calling it these days, yes?

q & a
Q: How thrilled was I to see this post over at Slaves to Fashion (a daily style blog from the folks at Glamour...um yes, the magazine...perhaps you've heard of it?)?
A: So thrilled I was practically in shock. After a short time lapse for recovery purposes, I headed straight here to brag to you.
Really, you should seriously consider reading it now. And just incase my excitement got you all excited and you've forgotten what you should be doing, here's another link: click it now.

52 weeks
Inspired by this website, my friend Julie suggested that her and I start a sort of visual journal wherein we would each take photos at regular intervals then place them together as a fun way to keep in touch. I immediately took to the idea thinking it would be interesting to see what similarities and/or differences emerge in our juxtaposed photos given that there is such a huge distance between us (she being in Utah and me in Hawaii).
After hashing out a few "rules" we decided to each post a photo a week (starting last week) for one year. They'll be posted each Friday to our respective flickr accounts, then I'll put them together and post the resulting image here so we can all enjoy the fun. For more enjoyment, feel free to make up your own stories to go along with the photos and leave them in the comments. Then click the links below to see how closely your story lines up with what we actually had to say.

everything is better in polaroid form
With the help of the free downloadable software available from Poladroid, you too could be spending unnecessary amounts of time transforming so-so photos of your local tasty chop suey shop into vintage-y (not a real word, obviously) looking polaroided (also, not real) masterpieces then uploading them to the flickr group of the same name.
Thanks to this lady (a fellow ex-Utahn!) for the tip.

north shore
It was a little bit overcast and chilly this morning on our side of the island, but the north shore was sunny and perfect. We climbed on the rocks and found crabs and snails and fish (the fish weren't on the rocks, obviously, but in the water between the rocks...just thought I'd clarify). A got soaking wet then insisted on stripping down and rolling in the sand before we left.

treasure hunt
"Those are the perfect bike riding witch shoes..." is what R said to me this morning. It was fitting, I suppose, since we were headed out for a bike ride. I did myself a favor and assumed the "witch" portion of the comment applied only to the shoes.
The reason for the bike ride is an important one. We were searching for the next clue in a treasure hunt. It has yet to be found, and I'm growing more discouraged by the day.
p.s. My legs are not a frighteningly bright yellow color...my tights are.

clubs
We went crazy and sprung for a zoo membership the other day. Now Ava can feel free to ignore the animals and make a beeline for the playground anytime she likes.
